But then you get to the skatepark and start rolling around and something feels off.

You try a trick that you know you can do... but you can't commit to it. You try again and the same thing happens and you jump off your board feeling a bit deflated.

Ladies and gentlemen I introduce to you 'the fear'.

This cheeky little bugger can strike at any moment, and it's usually when you least expect him. And it's always when he's not welcome.

I had 'the fear' strike last week. I was feeling great about getting to a park I'd not been to in ages and had planned out some lines I wanted to try. But after a few minutes warming up on my board everything felt weird.

My trucks were too loose after some board tlc from a few days ago, so I tightened them up and thought this would do the job. But it wasn't to be, and rolling down and then back up a bank saw me hoping off my board and feeling like it was the first time I'd ever skated.

As I saw my pals zooming around and trying out some new things (and getting them) I started to feel stupid. What was stopping me from doing that? Why was I feeling so freaked out by being on my board?

I watched the other skaters at the park, the feeling of anxiety growing as the park got a bit busier. I moved to a different part of the park, over to one of the things I had planned to try skating over this session. Each of my pals did it, and then I had a 'LET'S GO' moment... but as I pushed off I got scared again and I was jumping off my board just as quick as I had got on it.

I then tried the same thing again, but as I was pushing off I saw someone else start a run too and, worrying that I would hit them, stepped off my board... which resulted in a bash to the ankle. (I swear I do this every time I skate!)

And it was then that I decided I'd just call it a night and be the designated camerawoman for the rest of the evening.

What made me feel like this? No idea... which made it even more frustrating! Was it that the park was busier than we expected? Was it that I very much felt like a beginner getting in the way of more experienced skaters? Was it the slightly odd vibe at the park? Maybe it was all of these things, maybe it was none of them. But it sucked.

I've had this feeling before and can sometimes push through it and end up feeling good at the end of the session, but more often than not I decide it's better to stop skating and try again another day.

It's so true that skating is up and down... one day you can do something and then a couple of days later it's gone. It's also frustrating at times... I have definitely cried a few times when I couldn't get something. I don't have a magical solution to make 'the fear' go away and never come back, but being kind to yourself when you get it works for me. And knowing that today is just one session, and there's going to be another soon and you'll be feeling much better.

Skating is hard, being brave (especially as an adult) is hard, and some days you can go full send and other days it all feels too much. But it's important to still find the fun, so if that means not skating around and getting some rad videos of your pals and hyping them up then do that. Try and take a positive from each session, even if it's not from actually skating.
